NEW YORK— In a recent update, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced a significant expansion of the platform’s Notes feature to include Posts and Reels. Originally launched in late 2022, Instagram Notes allowed users to leave short, temporary messages in their inboxes. This new update extends the feature’s functionality, allowing users to add virtual post-it notes to both their own content and others’ posts and reels.
The Notes feature operates as a small, temporary message that disappears after three days. Users can add these notes by tapping the “paper plane” icon on a post or reel, selecting “add note,” and then entering their message. Afterward, they can choose to share the note with their followers, a specific group of friends, or all their followers. This new functionality provides an interactive layer to content by allowing users to engage in conversations directly through the notes.
Notes can be deleted at any time and can be replied to, with responses appearing as new chats in the original note-maker’s inbox. This interaction offers a fresh way for users to start conversations, share updates, or make recommendations.
In a follow-up post, Mosseri likened the Notes feature to instant messaging status updates, emphasizing that it is designed to foster engagement and conversation among users. “Notes doesn’t follow you back to reach those followers; it enables creators to start a conversation with their audience,” Mosseri explained.
For businesses and creators, the expansion of Notes into Posts and Reels presents an innovative opportunity to engage with their audience. To utilize this feature, accounts must first opt-in, and businesses can leverage public posts with special messages to connect with followers.
The extension of Instagram Notes to Posts and Reels represents a strategic move to enhance user interaction and engagement on the platform, making it easier for users to communicate and connect with each other through their content.
